Tonight, my older kids were going through some videos that they took over the last 18 months or so. I had never seen most of them, so it was a real treat for me to watch our kids (and me) interact. Over the next couple of posts, I thought I’d throw myself under the bus and show you some raw, unedited, unfiltered footage of life in our house.
To set up this footage, I need to tell you that this was in September, 2007. We had just moved halfway across the country, and it was blazing hot. I think we had something crazy like a month of 100 degree weather. We only had one window air conditioner and didn’t even have a library card at that point. We didn’t know anyone in town, the kids had left all of their friends behind, we had no church family, and our house was in desperate need of remodeling. Jeff was in the process of turning a backporch into a bedroom for us, and until it was finished we slept in the living room. I must have been washing the bedding on the day this video was made. If you watch the background of the video, you can see workers outside the window behind me. They are putting a new roof on part of our house.
Also, during this time, Jeff was unemployed for what ended up to be a five month long stint. I was 6 months pregnant with our 8th baby, our daughter Mariam Annaliese. She was a high-risk pregnancy because I had developed an rh problem (rather rare, known as the Big E antigen.) It was a difficult time – but we always knew that we were blessed and that God was with us.
Things are better now. We have our own bedroom and Mariam arrived healthy and sound.Â
The big kids playing on the bed are Nick and Jake, the little boys are Sam and Ben. Sam has dark hair (with a permanent marker streak on the side) and Ben is the blondie. My son Josiah and the girls aren’t in this movie. I think the little boys had been doing something cute, and we were trying to re-create the scene to no avail. I love watching the big boys interact with the little boys, and the little boys interact with each other. Life in a big family is crazy, but fun.
I don’t like how I look here, but I do like the way I look at the kids.
I love these hoodlums.

You know, the little kids don’t seem to know about any of that stuff you said in your post.

Holly, It is so good to hear your voice! and you’re so relaxed – I would have been repeating constantly “gentle” “be careful” “don’t poke him in the eye.” I have a lot to learn.
